I’m making my MOVES count for CP research!

Hi everyone!

I’m taking part in the Move4CP challenge to raise funds and awareness for cerebral palsy research.

I was diagnosed with CP when I was 18 months old. Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common lifelong physical disability in the world.

And even though living with CP can make exercise challenging, it’s still just as important to get moving and stay healthy. Over the next 21 days, my goal will be to do at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. To keep up with my progress, follow my Instagram page @1megan1exosym ! And if you would like to donate, all funds will go towards the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation.

One in 323 babies is diagnosed with CP each year, and estimated related lifetime costs exceed $1.2 million per person.

Your generous support will accelerate groundbreaking research to change what's possible for this underfunded condition. There are several vital research programs, including:

  • Training medical teams to detect cerebral palsy in babies as young as three months old, so they can get timely physical therapy.
  • Supporting research into new chronic pain treatments and solutions for millions of people with CP

Please help me reach my giving goal. Together, we change lives and move CP research forward.

Thanks so much for your support!

Days 18, 19, 20 - 1 DAY LEFT!

Wednesday 30th Jun
A record heat wave in the PNW, you say? Well, the challenge stops for no one, so I got moving anyway.

On Sunday, Day 18, I did what was perhaps the longest walk of my life (or at least in recent memory).

We hiked Dungeness Spit! It's 5 miles out to the lighthouse, then 5 miles back, plus there was a little trail to get down there from the park. So all in all, it was about 11 miles... with temperatures in the 90s. Fortunately we were prepared, with lots of sunscreen, water, hats, cooling towels, and just a few sunburns. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to step with my ExoSym on the sloped beach (with my right ankle in a fixed position, I have to make sure I bend my knee vs. overextend it), but by the end I had developed my own "plant and bend" technique that seemed to work. We were all exhausted by the end, but perked up with some burgers and ice cream afterwards. I'm so glad we did it!

On day 19, I beat the heat by doing some stand-up paddle boarding with my cousins - I did it kneeling, and had to jump off a few times just to stay cool!

Today was day 20 of 21, pretty chill day since I'm still a little sore from the epic Dungeness trek. Got in some disc golf at the end of the day. Let's just say I need to work on my throwing technique, but it was fun to get out there and throw some discs.

1 day left ... stay tuned for the big finale! Thanks for joining me on this journey.

Day 10 - hit my 10-hour movement goal!!

Saturday 19th Jun
You know coming into this challenge, I thought it would be a real uphill battle to get myself to move for 30 minutes a day. And yes, some days I've had to drag myself out the door... BUT I truly underestimated the power of having a team cheering you on! Knowing each of you are rooting for me has definitely given me a boost.

Today, I hit my 10-hour movement goal! That means I've moved (on average) 1 hr each day... wow! I'm also so thankful for my ExoSym device, which allows me to move day after day without dearly paying for it afterwards.

Did a hill workout on Thursday, 4 reps up and down a long hill we call "The Beast", prepping for a backpacking trip the week after next.

Yesterday and today have been recovery days, since my left hip was a little stiff after those hills (it's an overachiever). Feeling great today though! Spent some extra time stretching, went for a quick walk at the park and imagined I was training for the Paralympics. Then remembered this was a rest day, and I should probably envision a more relaxing goal, haha! But seriously, watching the Paralympic and Olympic trials has been really fun, I'd recommend it.

Thank you all!! What should my new movement goal be, I wonder??

Day 8 - booksellers unite, SMASHING goals, making new ones!

Thursday 17th Jun
WOW. Never underestimate the power of friends and an army of indie booksellers. As many of you know, I work at Eagle Harbor Books and when word got out that I was doing this fundraiser, they came in full force!

Floored by all of your support, and that somehow you all crushed my fundraising goal of $1000... and it's only day 8 of 21! I just raised it to $2000 to see how far we can go... do you think we can get to that #1 fundraising spot??

Thank you all - Day 5 down, 16 more to go!

Monday 14th Jun
You all are amazing! Here I was thinking I was just going to do this little challenge by myself, and now I have a whole team behind me. I'm so thankful for your support, both through donations and cheering me on.

So far moving has been fun! Special shout-out to my Auntie M for saying "Hey do you want to go on a hike today?" yesterday and following up! It rained the WHOLE time but we had so much fun, and who knows if it would've happened if it weren't for this challenge! So THANK YOU all, and onward!
